[Shingles Part 4] After Watching My Wife Suffer, I Finally Understood Why the Shingles Vaccine Matters

Key Points

After watching my wife suffer from shingles, I realized one important truth.
This is not just a simple skin condition. Shingles can cause severe nerve pain, sleepless nights, emotional stress, and long-lasting discomfort. That experience made me think seriously about prevention.

Two Types of Shingles Vaccines

At Hansangwoo Pain Medicine Clinic, I learned that there are two types of shingles vaccines.
One is the older live vaccine, Zostavax, and the other is the newer non-live vaccine.

Medical professionals explained that Zostavax is no longer used in the United States because its effectiveness decreases over time, especially in older adults.

Recommended Shingles Vaccine

Today, the vaccine recommended worldwide is Shingrix.
It is a non-live vaccine with over 90% effectiveness and is considered safer, even for people with weakened immune systems.

Vaccination Schedule

Shingrix requires two doses.
The second dose is typically given 2 to 6 months after the first. Even if delayed, there is no need to restart the series.

Cost in Korea

The cost was honestly surprising.
In Korea, the vaccine costs about ₩250,000 to ₩300,000 per dose.
The total cost for two doses is about ₩500,000 to ₩600,000 ($370–$450).

At first, it felt expensive. But after seeing my wife’s suffering, I began to think differently.

My Personal Experience

My wife took antiviral medication and received nerve block injections, but the pain did not go away easily.
There were nights when she could not sleep because of the pain, and watching her struggle was extremely difficult.

That experience made me realize how important prevention really is.

Side Effects and Safety

Shingrix may cause mild side effects such as pain at the injection site, fatigue, or a low fever.
These symptoms usually last only a few days and are minor compared to the pain caused by shingles.

Final Thoughts

Doctors explained that shingles can recur and become even more painful over time.
Even people who have already had shingles may benefit from vaccination.

After this experience, I strongly believe that shingles vaccination is something every adult over 50 should seriously consider.

If you are over 50, do not wait.
Getting vaccinated before the pain begins may be the smartest decision
you can make.

"Have you had your shingles vaccine yet? In the U.S., Shingrix is often covered by insurance for those over 50, but in Korea, we pay out of pocket. Regardless of the cost, seeing my wife’s struggle made me realize that prevention is priceless. What are your thoughts on shingles vaccination? Let’s talk in the comments!"
