Trump’s Project Freedom Is Raising New Fears of a Wider Middle East Conflict
Introduction
The global situation has once again entered a state of tension.
As tensions in the Middle East escalate, Donald Trump, former President of the United States, has proposed a military operation called “Project Freedom.”
This operation is centered around the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy transportation.
This issue is not merely a regional matter but a significant event that could impact the global economy.
What is Project Freedom
Project Freedom is a military operation aimed at securing maritime routes, protecting commercial vessels, and stabilizing oil supply.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes.
The United States has deployed 15,000 troops, naval forces, and air defense systems to protect the route and prevent further escalation.
Rising Military Tensions
Iran has continued threatening actions using drones, missile launches, and fast attack boats.
The United States has intercepted most of these attacks, and in some clashes, Iranian vessels were reportedly destroyed.
As a result, tensions between the two countries have escalated to the level of actual confrontation.
Trump’s Strong Warning
Donald Trump, the former president, issued a very strong warning.
“If Iran attacks U.S. vessels, it will be wiped off the face of the earth.”
This statement demonstrates a firm stance that the United States will not tolerate any form of aggression.
Iran’s Response
Iran has also maintained a hardline position without backing down.
It stated that any U.S. military presence in the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a hostile act and warned that such forces could become targets of attack.
This has further increased the possibility of direct military confrontation between the two nations.
Global Impact
If the situation worsens, it could have a significant impact on the global economy.
There is a strong possibility of oil price surges, logistics disruptions, and supply chain breakdowns.
Countries that heavily depend on Middle Eastern oil will be directly affected.
Korean Conservative Perspective
From a South Korean conservative perspective, there is a strong belief that firm military deterrence is necessary.
There is also a position that Iran, considered part of an “axis of evil” suppressing approximately 5 million Christians, should never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
Many argue that South Korea should deploy its Aegis fleet and Marine forces, and that U.S. leadership plays a crucial role in maintaining global stability.
My Perspective
This issue is not merely a regional conflict in the Middle East, but one that directly impacts global security and the economy.
If the Strait of Hormuz becomes unstable, the effects will inevitably spread worldwide, including to South Korea.
Ultimately, the key question is this.
While rising oil prices are inconvenient now, if Iran succeeds in becoming a nuclear-armed state, not only Arab nations but also African countries may attempt nuclear armament, plunging the world into uncontrollable nuclear fear.
It is the view of many South Korean conservatives, including myself, that South Korea, Japan, and European allies should naturally deploy military forces to the Strait of Hormuz.
